Michael "Mike" Opheim

Michael I. “Mike” Opheim, 71 of Humboldt, passed away on Saturday evening, April 22, 2023 at MercyOne Medical Center – North Iowa in Mason City. 

He was born April 30, 1951 in Fort Dodge, the son of Irvin G. and Ione (Lieuwen) Opheim.  He grew up in Rutland at an early age moved with his family to an acreage near Dakota City before moving to Humboldt.  He graduated from Humboldt High School in 1969 and later obtained his degree in horticulture from Iowa State University.  Mike began a career as a painter and operated Mike Opheim Painting.  He brought his great-nephew Weston into the business in 2016.

Mike was an avid reader and enjoyed bicycling, gardening, baking, Twins baseball and Public Radio.  He traveled many times to see friends in Montana and Glacier National Park and he loved his kitty, Papi.

He is survived by his niece Liza (Ron) Marchant and their children Caitlin (Caleb) Reimers, Graham & Delaney and Weston (Nicole Koethe) Marchant and Roman all of Humboldt, his nephew Josh (Sarah) Opheim of Ames and their children Christopher, Anna Sophia, Joseph and Nicholas and his sister-in-law Pam Opheim of Ames.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dennis and his sister Janet.
