Michael R. "Mike" Worthington

May 7, 1949 — November 1, 2022

Michael R. “Mike” Worthington, 73, of Humboldt, passed away suddenly on Tuesday evening, November 1, 2022, while visiting family in Piqua, Ohio.

Mike was born May 7, 1949 in Fort Dodge, the son of Robert and Elizabeth (Hankins) Worthington.  He was raised and educated in Humboldt, graduating from Humboldt High School in 1967 where he participated in football, basketball and golf.  Mike went on to attend Iowa Central Community College, Iowa State University, and Mankato State University.  He was drafted into the United States Army in 1971 and served at Fort Belvoir in Virginia.  He returned to Humboldt in late 1974 and made a commitment to work with his father in the family business, Worthington Insurance and Real Estate.  On July 16, 1977, he was united in marriage to Patricia A. Donnelly, the couple made their home in Humboldt. Mike sold the insurance agency in 2013 and continued to work for Town & Country Insurance until retiring in 2016.

Mike was an active community member, promoting Humboldt and the surrounding area.  He served for 15 years on the Park Board, was involved with the Friends of the Park Foundation, the River Development Foundation, an active member of the Jaycees and the 7 O’clock Kiwanis. Mike was elected to the Humboldt City Council in 2017, and he proudly served the community as an at-large council member. Mike enjoyed participating in the Castle Theatre and Community Theatre. Mike believed that if there was an opportunity to volunteer you just did it. Mike was a man who gave his time and energy, expecting nothing in return, other than the joy and satisfaction of knowing he had helped another person in some way. Besides his strong commitment to the City of Humboldt, Mike had two other passions.  He loved his family and was a very loving, protective and caring husband, dad, and grandfather. His grandchildren loved when Mike would let them drive his golf cart, dress as Santa, play games, and be silly. Mike’s last passion was golf. He could, more than likely, be found on the golf course, and tried to play daily (before)?!!! and after his retirement. Mike was well known at the Humboldt Country Club where he was a lifelong member. Mike loved a good game of golf and just having fun. Mike was an avid fan of Iowa State. He really enjoyed vacations on Hilton Head Island….a golfer’s paradise. Mike’s love of family, community, life, and golf will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years Pat (Patty) of Humboldt, his son Brian (Jenny)Menke of Ankeny and their children Grant, Gracie and Gabby, his sister Lisa Johns (Brian Moore) of Albuquerque, his nieces Maria (Amaru) Robinson, Kathleen Niegocki (Brent) Eysler, great niece Avery Robinson, sister-in-law Nancy Donnelly and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, nephew Ben and sister-in-law Mary Kay Donnelly Niegocki and brother-in-law John Niegocki.
