Pauline Ersland was born on her farm near Hardy, Iowa July 7, 1930 to Thomas and Christine (Luthro) Ersland. Pauline grew up on the farm and went to school in the country and in Hardy before attending 4 years of high school at Augustana Academy in Canton, SD. Following graduation, Pauline worked in Sioux Falls. On March 11, 1950, she married Myron Westre at Our Savior’s Church in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple then moved to a farm near Thor for about 2 years during which time they welcomed a son, Timothy. The family then moved to the family farm near Hardy where they lived the remainder of their married life. During the ensuing years Myron and Pauline welcomed two more children, Gene and Virginia. Pauline kept the home, raised the children, and helped Myron with farm work. Myron passed away in 1998, and Pauline maintained her home on the farm until 2004, when she moved to Cairo.
Pauline was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hardy where she acted as church organist for many years. She was an active member of the church and ELCW and her circle. She joined Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cairo, NY upon moving there. People who met Pauline described her as a generous, kind, good hearted and godly soul. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She shared her gift of music with her family and others mostly by playing the piano and organ for many events including weddings and funerals. She was active right up to the time of her passing. She accomplished all of these things but remained humble and sweet.
